Proper Overhead Crane Inspections: Don’t Forget the Runway!

During the life of your overhead or suspended crane, you should inspect the condition of the runway on which it operates for damage or wear. Depending on the frequency of use, the ratio of the wheel load rating, and the load capacity available for the track, these inspections may need to be performed more often than you would normally expect. The typical requirement for a running track on any crane is once per year. For heavy Class D or E cranes and any crane operating in a harsh working environment, you need to inspect more often, and in some cases much more often.

Runway inspections should include:

• General condition of the rail running surface over the entire length of the track
• Rail splice conditions and bolts
• Rail fixings, including bolts, clips or hook bolts
• Inspection of the rail span for parallelism
• Condition of the crane truck wheels
• In some situations, the elevation of the rails to check their flatness must also be checked.

These track inspections and any subsequent repairs can save your business or organization thousands of dollars in downtime, emergency repairs, or accident damage.

Failure to perform timely inspections may result in cracking or fractures of truck/beam or track ends, broken fasteners, and other serious damage.
